LISTEN TO THE PLUGGED IN SHOW, EPISODE 108
Quick quiz: Of the five movies that have earned the most money this year, how many are sequels, reboots or franchise add-ons?
Answer: All of them. Expand the list to the year’s top 20 movies, and 17 fit the bill. From James Bond (No Time to Die) to the Ghostbusters (Afterlife), from classic musicals (West Side Story) to slapstick comedies (Home Sweet Home Alone), the entertainment world loves nothing better than a known property—something audiences loved before and, presumably, will love again. (And don’t even get me started on movies from the Marvel Cinematic Universe—the 27th of which releases this weekend.)
So why does Hollywood love these old familiar properties? Why do we? And what, as parents, do we need to be especially aware of when it comes to these things?
And, since we’re talking about sequels (of sorts), we’ll unpack Hawkeye, the newest Marvel TV show on Disney+, wherein the hero may be getting a human sequel of his own (in the form of young Kate Bishop).
