The Plugged In Show, Episode 202: Helping Kids with News Anxiety. Plus, Netflix’s ‘Barbie: A Touch of Magic’

LISTEN TO THE PLUGGED IN SHOW, EPISODE 202

There’s an old journalistic saying that says, “If it bleeds, it leads.” Granted, I never heard that in any newsroom I’ve ever worked in, but the underlying message is true enough: If blood and innards stay safely inside someone’s bod, all is normal. No need to report on that. But if it starts leaking out … well, maybe there’s a reason for that. And maybe even a reason that people want, and need, to know about.

That’s why most of the news that comes across our screens or through our earbuds tends to be bad news. But all that bad news can be a source of anxiety for many—especially teens. And when most of that news is brought to us by social media—platforms that value clicks far more than objectivity or balance—that anxiety can be even more of a problem. After all, the angrier or scarier a news story is, the more likely the average person is to read it. And the more of that sort of news a person clicks, the more likely an algorithm will give you more of the same.

And, let’s be honest … there’s not even any guarantee that all the “news” we see on social media is even true.

How do we help our teens navigate the often harrowing news cycle? And how can we help them tell what’s real news—and what’s not?

Adam and I sit down and talk with Daniel Huerta, a licensed counselor and Focus on the Family’s vice president for Parenting and Youth, to talk about those issues and others. It’s a pretty great conversation, if I say so myself.

And then Adam and I visit with Emily Tsiao, who reviewed the Barbie movie for us a few months back. That makes her the team’s de facto Barbie expert, so we quiz her on another Barbie entertainment offering—Netflix’s show Barbie: A Touch of Magic.

Yep, the episode is packed with information, conversation and fun. And once you listen, feel free to turn around and feed us of all of the above, too. Reach out via Instagram and Facebook. Write us an email at [email protected]. Or leave us a voice message, too, by going to The Plugged In Show homepage.

And, of course, join us for The Plugged In Show Aftercast, every Friday at 4 p.m. Mountain Time. After all, we need some viewers to keep us in line.

  1. -Well definitely wouldn’t watch anything barbie now and even if the show isn’t as bad as the horrible new barbie propaganda anti man flick pretty much made me not want anything to do with barbie. The world needs more Scripture truth and not false world truth…
