LISTEN TO THE PLUGGED IN SHOW, EPISODE 100
They say that the most frightening monsters lie within ourselves.
But don’t tell that to the makers of movies, who every October trot out scads of cinematic creatures and film-based fiends for our … enjoyment?
And kids’ movies are no exception. Why, we’re going to be talking about a couple of them in this very podcast—The Addams Family 2 and Muppets Haunted Mansion—and dive into deeper issues. Why do people like monster movies? Can we suss out some good messages from even horror flicks? When a very silly movie (like Muppets Haunted Mansion) contains very spiritual content, what is a parent to do?
And after we wrap up that not-so-terrifying talk, we dive into DC Comics’ latest decision to have Clark Kent’s son, Jonathan (who dons his pappy’s famous cape as Superman) come out as bisexual.
And if that wasn’t all, we also have a very special, rather embarrassing surprise for you. (I’d tell you, but it’d spoil the surprise.)

-Well considering we were clearly created to be only with the other sex and anything else is obviously and should be an issue, I would say making Superman’s son bisexual in new comics totally lame, clearly agenda and obviously something Christians should not be okay with. As for the muppets monster newest show considering it’s Disney, which is now full of agenda, has elements probably not for everyone, and probably not nearly as good as original Muppet movies, think I’ll be skipping that too…
-Disclaimer: Not big into Superman, so I don’t really follow the comics or anything. But there is a huge spectrum of how LGBT people can be and often are treated in real life even from Christians who adhere to a conservative reading of the Bible (i.e., you don’t have to say that “God endorses gay marriage” to ask the question of “how would Jesus, or Superman, ethically and compassionately treat someone who is in need of help and human dignity even if they’re LGBT”). And it falls to us to ask, How can we make sure these people’s human needs are being met? Because those don’t go away, whether for food, shelter, physical safety, or even emotional warmth, just because these people are engaging in relationships with the same sex.
-I’ve never been much of a muppets fan myself, much preferring fraggle rock to the muppets honestly. But really when it comes to monster movies I’m a huge unapologetic fan of Friday the 13th and its various sequels and am even quite the fan of the Michael Myers led Halloween films. Other films like saw or hostel not so much.
