YouTube Channel Review

To be under consideration for a Plugged In YouTube review, a channel usually needs to be pretty popular—or else raise the stakes of their content to a level that makes them stand out.

Apparently, Max Greb thought we said, “raise the steaks.”

Max is the name behind Max the Meat Guy, a cooking channel with a particular interest in all things meat (though the channel works with other ingredients, too).

Since its creation in 2020, Max the Meat Guy has amassed more than 8 million subscribers. The channel’s mixes meat-centric challenges with practical cooking advice. Viewers can expect to see “coyote brisket” next to videos on how to pick out a proper steak from the store.

Granted, most of Greb’s videos are YouTube-style challenges rather than recipes, so viewers should probably watch the channel for fun rather than to get better at cooking.

But content-wise, how does the channel render down?

POSITIVE CONTENT

The channel features helpful videos on how to prepare certain styles of meat. Greb also provides his opinion on which cuts of meat to buy and which to avoid. Likewise, he offers cooking tips.

Greb often collaborates with other cooking YouTubers, such as Nick DiGiovanni. Usually, it’s to participate in fun food-based competitions. In other videos, his video crew joins him for taste testing.

Some videos focus on unique cooking challenges, such as cooking “every exotic” egg, pepper or bird. Greb prepares each item himself, and then he ranks them on how good they taste. These can be quite fun and interesting, as he’ll describe the flavor of unusual cuts of meat, such as stingray, coyote or ostrich.

CONTENT CONCERNS

Suffice to say, if you’re a vegetarian, you probably won’t be interested in the channel. But a couple of meat items that appear in videos, like a fertilized duck egg, might be a step too far even for meat lovers.

Greb sometimes cooks with and drinks alcohol in his videos.

We hear the occasional sexual innuendo, such as “What can I say? The guy likes meat … that’s kinda suspicious,” or “Every time you cook vegan steaks, you need to use protection.”

While the f-word and s-word are censored, crudities like “a–,” “b–ch,” “d–n” and “p-ss” are not. God’s name is occasionally used in vain, and Jesus’ name is likewise used as an expletive.

CHANNEL SUMMARY

Max the Meat Guy offers culinary challenges that focus primarily on and around meat. While his content is entertaining, the occasional crude word or light innuendo might feel like a hair in your food.

Kennedy Unthank

Kennedy Unthank studied journalism at the University of Missouri. He knew he wanted to write for a living when he won a contest for “best fantasy story” while in the 4th grade. What he didn’t know at the time, however, was that he was the only person to submit a story. Regardless, the seed was planted. Kennedy collects and plays board games in his free time, and he loves to talk about biblical apologetics. He’s also an avid cook. He thinks the ending of Lost “wasn’t that bad.”
