Superhero fatigue? Um, maybe not.
Sure, we’ve seen some cracks in the genre as of late. But this weekend, our friendly neighborhood Spider-Man took just about every neighborhood by storm. Spider-Man: Brand New Day soared to an estimated $355 million weekend in North America.
That’s a lot of money for a superhero who, just a few years ago, was still living with his aunt.
In fact, Brand New Day’s opening fell just $2 million shy of being the biggest debut in cinematic history. Only Avengers: Endgame has done better during its opening frame, sweeping in $357.1 million in 2019. Endgame, of course, went on to gross $858.4 million domestically and stands as the second highest-grossing film of all time (behind Star Wars: Episode VII—The Force Awakens).
Clearly, Brand New Day has already entered rarified air. In fact, the newest Spider-Man movie is, in just one weekend, the year’s fifth highest-earning film—and it’ll likely pass fourth-place Michael ($372.3 million) by the time you finish reading this paragraph.
Oh, and lest you think that Spidey’s attraction stops at U.S. shores, think again. Brand New Day earned even more overseas, collecting $572 million to push its global gross to an amazing $927 million.
Thanks largely to Brand New Day, this past weekend became the highest-grossing weekend ever at the box office—with more than $429 million rolling into movie studios. I think we can officially say that the movie biz has recovered from COVID.
Two-time champ The Odyssey proved to be the best of the rest. Christopher Nolan’s epic collected another $51 million stateside this weekend, pushing its domestic tally to $395.5 million. Fittingly, The Odyssey has made a name for itself on plenty of other exotic shores, stuffing its hull with $515.9 million from overseas markets. Overall, The Odyssey has earned $911.4 million.
A trio of family-centric films closed out the weekend’s top five.
Toy Story 5 landed in third place, adding another $6.3 million domestically to its own overstuffed coffers. Toy Story 5 is the year’s biggest film (for the moment), boasting $461.7 million in North American earnings. Add its overseas take, and Toy Story 5 has earned nearly $1.1 billion.
Minions & Monsters finished fourth with $5.8 million. Moviedom’s favorite yellow rapscallions have now earned $168.4 million stateside and nearly $450 million globally.
Moana took home a fifth-place ribbon this weekend for its $5.3 million in receipts. While the live-action update has received plenty of slings and arrows, Moana has still managed to clear $114.8 million domestically and $261.1 million worldwide.
