How Dennis Quaid Rediscovered God

Actor Dennis Quaid has been working in the film industry for five decades now, becoming one of Hollywood’s most bankable leading men in the 1980s. But over the last several years, his career has taken a decidedly spiritual turn.

Quaid landed in Soul Surfer in 2011, playing surfer Bethany Hamilton’s loving father, Tom. In 2018, he took on the role of a much different sort of dad in I Can Only Imagine: Arthur, the alcoholic, abusive and ultimately redeemed father of Bart Millard—who goes onto become the lead singer of the Christian group MercyMe. He played a grizzled fisherman in Blue Miracle, an inspiring coach in American Underdog, and this weekend you can see him embody the actor, politician and president, Ronald Reagan.

Quaid’s turn toward faith-based projects was no accident.

Quaid told Focus on the Family President Jim Daly that he’d been a spiritual “seeker” for decades. And as he was seeking, he also sought ways to fill “that hole” that can only be filled by God. That ultimately led him to a stint in rehab in 1990 for cocaine addiction—and back to the Bible as well, where he rediscovered the “red words of Jesus.”

You can hear Quaid talk about that journey himself right here:

Quaid touches on plenty of other topics during this wide-ranging, illuminating conversation with Daly—especially on what it was like to play one of the United States’ most beloved, yet debated, presidents. We’d invite you to listen and watch the whole thing.
