The Plugged In Show, Episode 195: A Look at This Year’s Christian Movies. Plus ‘Transformers: EarthSpark’

LISTEN TO THE PLUGGED IN SHOW, EPISODE 195

Christian movies are just about as old as movies themselves. And for generations, films with Christian themes were reliable money-makers. (Admittedly, most starred Charlton Heston.)

Over the last several decades, Christian filmmaking has largely been pushed out of the mainstream and into its own religious niche. With the occasional exception, Hollywood has ignored faith-based filmmaking and funneled its cash into its next CGI sequel. Or, at least, until a Christian film makes Hollywood take notice—which seems to happen every couple of years.

But 2023 has been something of a banner year for the Christian film industry. In a year in which many CGI sequels have faltered or failed, movies such as The Jesus Revolution, His Only Son and Sound of Freedom—all made with modest budgets—have drawn sizable audiences.

That makes it a great time to talk about lessons: Have Christian filmmakers learned new lessons about how to make strong, successful films? And what lessons might Hollywood learn from this latest wave of faith-based films? Our team will discuss this year’s Christian movies and what they mean—not spiritually, but secularly—in this episode.

Then we’ll turn our attention away from potentially transformative filmmaking to Transformers of a different kind. The new kids’ show Transformers: EarthSpark has some strong energy, according to our reviewer Kristin Smith. But it also has a few issues that might make parents pull on the choke.

Once you listen, you can undergo your own transformation—from a listener to an engager. We’d love to hear what you think. What do you think about Christian movies today? Do you have a favorite? What lessons should Hollywood take from them? Talk to us on Facebook, Instagram or send your thoughts to us at [email protected]. You can even send us a voicemail on our Plugged In Show homepage.

And why not join us for The Plugged In Show Aftercast, too? You can find it Monday at 3 p.m. Mountain Time on Instagram, where we’ll be talking about this week’s show, next week’s show and the weekend’s biggest movies.
