The Plugged In Show, Episode 191: The Promise and Peril of Nerd Culture. Plus, Olivia Rodrigo’s “Vampire”

LISTEN TO THE PLUGGED IN SHOW, EPISODE 191

Say what you want about this curious age we live in—but at least it’s an age in which grown men can build Batman LEGO sets without (much) reprisal.

Yes, it’s OK to be a “nerd” these days. Movie theaters are filled with sci-fi flicks and superheroes. Streaming services offer an avalanche of anime. Knowing the difference between a Corellian cruiser and a Recusant-class destroyer is less an invitation to get beat up and more a mark of distinction.

But does our nerdy pop culture come with its own set of downsides? Should even we nerds be cautious of what society is selling? We explore that (and much more) in our opening segment of this week’s podcast.

Vampires, when you think about it, were folklore’s first nerds. They had pasty complexions. They never got out much during the day. Their social skills left many feeling a little, um, drained.

But when Olivia Rodrigo recorded her song “Vampire,” she seems to have a different sort of fellow in mind. Our music expert Kristin Smith tells us all about it.

Then we invite you to join into the conversation. Tell us about your most nerd-riffic passions. Offer us your thoughts on pop culture today—what we should embrace about it, and what should we sprinkle with holy water and run away from. Visit us on Facebook and Instagram and tell us what you think. Don’t want to do that? Send us an email instead ([email protected].) Or leave us a voice message on The Plugged In Show’s landing page.

And yeah, we’ll still be on tap for the Plugged In Show Aftercast this coming Monday on Instagram (@pluggedinteam), 3 p.m. Mountain Time. There, two Plugged In folks will talk about the week’s hottest movies, discuss our latest podcast and give you a look at our own coming attractions.

And until we meet again, live long and prosper.
