The Plugged In Show, Episode 192: A Look at Summer Blockbuster Movies: Haunted Mansion, Barbie and Oppenheimer

If you’re a Hollywood accountant, the summer of 2023 had mostly been underwhelming and disappointing. Lots of big movies have underperformed or flat-out flopped.

And then Barbenheimer happened. That, of course, was the name the internet dreamed up fusing Barbie and Oppenheimer together. Suddenly, the bean counters in Tinseltown were feeling a bit more upbeat after both of these movies crushed it at the box office in their opening frames.

So this week, we’re going to talk about them, what you need to know about each. And we’ll toss another Disney hopeful into the ring, too, Haunted Mansion, which lands in theaters this weekend. Are fans of the creepy ride at Disneyland going to enjoy this cinematic adaptation of it? You’ll have to listen to this episode of The Plugged In Show to find out.

  1. -Semi-related, I really wish certain genres of movies would be more judicious about where and how they’re advertised. “Oppenheimer” was not a particularly disturbing film in the visceral sense of being scary to watch, other than some tactfully portrayed visions of “what if the atomic bomb were also used on XYZ group of people,” but one of the trailers beforehand was an “Exorcist” trailer that I almost found overwhelming. I didn’t really sign up for that, and it almost feels like a sort of consent issue. If I were watching next month’s “Last Voyage of the Demeter” (it being a ship Dracula is on), I would be somewhat more understanding. But I think all of “Oppenheimer” had less traditionally ‘scary’ content than that trailer did. Likewise for some sort of dark-looking FX/Hulu drama I got an advertisement for before “Barbie” (deservingly rated PG-13, but not for scariness) started, or the “Red Sparrow” trailer my parents and I saw when seeing “Black Panther” in the theaters. That trailer seemed … misplaced, especially for a movie where a lot of audiences are probably bringing their young children (likewise with “Barbie”).
