The Plugged In Show, Episode 185: ‘Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse’ & ‘The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom’

LISTEN TO THE PLUGGED IN SHOW, EPISODE 185

I wonder what Stan Lee would have said if you’d told him in August, 1962, that the teenage hero he’d just introduced in Amazing Fantasy 15 would become a dominant force in pop culture. So dominant, in fact, that 61 years after Spider-Man arrived (surely Peter Parker must be getting his AARP discounts by now, right?), yet another movie based on the character would be webbing its way into theaters.

That animated flick, of course, is Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. And in this alternate universe, a young man named Miles Morales is the focus of the story, not Peter Parker. This week on The Plugged In Show, Bob Hoose and I will unpack this film’s themes, morals and issues—including a brief statement from me about some concerns that popped up after we recorded this podcast.

In our second segment, we’ll pivot toward a conversation about the new video game The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. It’s the latest entry in the long-running Zelda franchise, and we’ll tell you everything you need to know.

One more thing: We’d love to hear what you have to say about both of these segments. What thoughts, questions, concerns or insights do you have about Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse and Tears of the Kingdom? You can let us know on Facebook or Instagram, or via email at [email protected].

And we now have another way you can connect with us, too. On The Plugged In Show’s landing page, look for the sideways black tab on the far right—sidling right next to your scrollbar. You can use that to send us a voice message to tell us what you’re thinking. And we might even use that message on a future episode of the show.

Finally, make sure you follow us on Instagram (@pluggedinteam) to get notifications for our new feature The Plugged In Show Aftercast. Each Monday at 3:00 p.m. Mountain Time, two members of our team will spend some time talking about the weekend box office results, as well as receiving your comments about last week’s Plugged In Show and giving a preview of the new show this week. We’re having a blast connecting with Plugged In’s audience, and we’d love for you to join us there!

  1. -Tears of the Kingdom is a masterpiece! most certainly will be game of the year!!

    1. -I haven’t played it yet, but it’s been super interesting to see the kinds of things people have been building in it.

  2. -Speaking of fantasy, I’m super glad y’all loved Kiki’s Delivery Service. That’s one of my two favorite Ghibli films alongside From Up on Poppy Hill despite the latter’s subject matter (while never really being scary) being too mature and complex for young children.
