LISTEN TO THE PLUGGED IN SHOW, EPISODE 170
Were you around back in 1970? I was, just barely. And so was an aging, discouraged pastor of a small Southern California church that was struggling mightily against the countercultural tide flooding the culture. Many of its free-spirited adherents—known as hippies, of course—wanted nothing to do with tradition, religion or anything that had to do with anything, well, old. Chuck Smith checked that last box with gusto.
But then something weird happened. Or, more accurately, providential: His daughter brought home a hippie friend … who happened to be telling everyone he know about Jesus. Sure, he talked funny, looked funny and had some funny ideas to boot. But when it came to Jesus, Lonnie Frisbee’s passion for his faith and to help “his people” come to know Him was unrivaled. Soon, Chuck’s church became the unofficial epicenter of the Jesus movement sweeping not only SoCal, but the whole country.
Jesus Revolution, the new movie from codirectors Jon Erwin and Brent McCorkle, chronicles this most unlikely story of revival. Paul Asay, Kristin Smith and I talk about it in the first segment. And in our second segment, you’ll hear from three of the actors involved with the movie, including Jonathan Roumie, who’s perhaps better known these days for portraying Jesus in the TV show The Chosen.
So give this week’s show a listen, then tell us what you think. Are you planning on seeing Jesus Revolution in theaters? You can share your thoughts on Plugged In’s Facebook and Instagram accounts, or shoot us an email at [email protected].
