LISTEN TO THE PLUGGED IN SHOW, EPISODE 124

Every now and then, something happens on live TV that becomes an indelible part of our pop-culture experience. Whether we’re talking about Janet Jackson’s 2004 Super Bowl halftime show “wardrobe malfunction,” Tom Cruise’s enthusiastic couch-jumping on Oprah or Kanye West interrupting Taylor Swift’s Grammy acceptance speech, these moments become watersheds for our ongoing conversations about values, decorum our expectations of celebrity behavior.

Well, now we can add “The Slap” to our list.

Even if you didn’t watch or had no interest in this year’s Academy Awards, Will Smith’s shocking slap of presenter Chris Rock (due to a joke by Rock about Smith’s wife, Jada Pinkett-Smith) has instantly become a conversational lightning rod that virtually everyone has seen at this point. We’ll talk about what happened, what we think about it and how veteran actor Denzel Washington tried to offer some spiritual perspective on Smith’s failure in the moment.

In our second segment, we’ll return to the fact that Oscar actually picked a best picture this year—a fact kinda buried in the avalanche of Will Smith coverage. It’s called CODA, which stands for Children of Deaf Adults. Plugged In reviewer Paul Asay will help us see why this pic got picked, as well as talking about the content in the movie as a whole.

So take a listen, and then tells us what you think about this week’s conversations. How did you respond to Will Smith’s slaps? And if you’ve seen CODA, what did you think about it? You chare your thoughts and experiences on Plugged In’s Facebook and Instagram, or shoot us an email at [email protected]. We’d love to hear from you.
