LISTEN TO THE PLUGGED IN SHOW, EPISODE 123

Social media can be a bit of a paradox for parents.

On one hand, most of us probably have some sort of personal account on Facebook, or maybe Twitter or Instagram. We know our kids can look at some of these platforms—Facebook, especially—with a roll of the eyes that tells us they think it’s for “old people.”

Meanwhile, they’re Snapchatting, TikToking, Discording and generally staying well ahead of us old fogies when it comes to social media use—sometimes even adopting new platforms and embracing interactive avenues before we even know they exist. The other day, for example, my 13-year-old said of a funny video her mom had just watched on Facebook, “Oh yeah, I saw that three months ago on TikTok.” Right then.

So how do we keep up? Is keeping up with our kids’ social media “know-it-all-ness” even the right goal? How can we interact with this influential media stream in our kids’ lives? How do we protect them?

This week on The Plugged In Show, we’ll dive into those questions and more.

We’ll also talk about Hallmark’s enormously popular show When Calls the Heart, now back for its ninth season of heartwarming-but-dramatic storytelling.

So take a listen, and let us know what you thought about this week’s show. How is it going navigating the world of social media in your home? Share your thoughts and experiences on Facebook and Instagram, or shoot us an email at [email protected]. And be sure to check out the links below!

  1. -I’ve been watching when calls the heart since day one and in my opinion once Mounty Jack and full house’s Aunt Becky went away the show started falling apart. The tug of war Elizabeth had between Nathan and Lucas was just tiresome after awhile, and now that she’s chosen Lucas who still seems to have a lot of secrets it hasn’t really gotten any better. Bottom line is the show used to be great but just like Good Witch it’s starting to go down the toilet. Thankfully I still have Young Sheldon and Ghosts to enjoy.

    1. -I also wasn’t super happy with how the creators gaslighted and denigrated fans when we disagreed with the turn the story was taking. That to me was more insulting than the writing.

I think this is part of the reason I gave up on live-action media. Every show I got invested in either started to inject woke politics or just had shoddy writing. With the exception of The Chosen, I haven’t watched live action Western media in like… 3 years.
