Movie Tuesday: Yep, ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ Won Again

Plenty of new movies flooded the multiplex over the Labor Day weekend. But to no avail: For the fifth time in six weeks, Deadpool & Wolverinelanded up top.

Sure, the weekend’s estimated earnings might look a little paltry for Deadpool & Wolverine—especially considering the superhero flick had a whole extra day to work with. Still, the $19.4 million it earned in North America during the extended holiday weekend was more than enough for the film to take first place yet again.

That pushed Deadpool & Wolverine’s total North American haul to $$603.8 million, putting it within shouting distance of the year’s biggest flick, Inside Out 2. The Pixar sequel has long stood atop 2024’s box-office standings, and it currently boasts $651 million.

Add in overseas receipts for both, and Inside Out 2 has a wider margin. It’s by far the biggest film globally this year, having earned just south of $1.7 billion. Deadpool & Wolverine’s global gross currently stands at $1.3 billion.

But back to the Labor Day weekend.

Alien: Romulus again landed at No. 2, earning $11.2 million over the extended four-day weekend.

Reagan, a kindly biopic of the United States’ 40th president, was the only newcomer to crack the top five. It landed at No. 3 with about $10 million, according to Box Office Mojo. That’s a pretty strong showing, by the way: Most experts expected it would earn $5 million this weekend. The movie apparently looked at those modest expectations and said, “Mr. Prognosticators, tear down this wall!”

Twisters continues to spin in the top five, earning $9.6 million to finish fourth—just about $100,000 ahead of fifth-place It Ends With Us.

Outside Reagan, no other newbie finished close to the top five. AfrAId debuted with a $4.4 million, ninth-place finish. City of Dreams landed in 15th with $1.4 million. And Slingshot—a strange little sci-fi flick starring Casey Affleck and Laurence Fishburne–might as well have crashed into the moons of Jupiter. It earned only $581,600 to finish 20th. We’ve not heard any estimates yet for You Gotta Believe.

  1. Off-topic, but thanks for reviewing the YouTube channel “Ryan’s World.” Considering the unthinkable amount of money his family has made, and considering his very young age, I’ve worried for years that he’s effectively being Jackie Coogan’d.

  2. This makes me want to go to the theaters, seems like there’s a good bit of movies to go watch
