YouTube Channel Review

A few years ago, we covered a YouTube channel called CinemaSins, which focuses its efforts on pointing out plot holes, nonsensical moments and mistakes in movies. The channel creator, Jeremy Scott, calls such thing “sins.”

Well, fellow YouTuber Lee Boucher must have seen some of those videos and thought, “this could use a little more positivity.”

And thus, CinemaWins was made.

Boucher’s iteration of the idea does pretty much the same thing as Scott’s, even using the same format, save for one key difference:

Boucher looks for things to compliment rather than criticize.

POSITIVE CONTENT

Compared to CinemaSins, CinemaWins is the more cheerful sibling by far. Wins comes with a bit of a quip against Sins in its channel banner: “Because liking things is more fun than not liking things.”

To that end, Boucher finds plenty he can compliment within movies, including the aesthetics, the musical scores, the art styles, the acting, the plots, the jokes, the action sequences and more. He’ll even find a nice thing or two to say about characters in the film he doesn’t particularly like. And he’s happy to give plenty of “wins” for moments that promote self-sacrifice, heroism and mercy, too.

Within some of those wins, Boucher occasionally provides viewers with insight into movie moments that audiences may have missed. He’ll point out clever callbacks to earlier moments, small details that reinforce character continuity, camera work that elevates a scene and more.

CONTENT CONCERNS

Most of the time, content concerns will be relegated to the movie Boucher is commenting on—sexual and/or violent movies and shows like Deadpool, John Wick and Rick & Morty appear on the channel. While graphic nudity is censored and heavy violence is typically blurred, not everything is hidden away. For instance, we’ll still see women in underwear and hear sexually explicit jokes. One video is sponsored by a sex shop, and Boucher makes plenty of references to it.

As for violence, we’ll still see a decapitation, people getting shot or stabbed and blood—the last of which is usually, though not always, colored gray by Boucher to satisfy YouTube content standards.

Usually, Boucher censors heavy language. But we do hear one instance of the s-word, “h—” and misuses of God’s name.

Occasionally, Boucher throws in a political comment or two related to something happening in the movie.

CHANNEL SUMMARY

Between CinemaSins and CinemaWins, Boucher’s version of the concept is definitely more enjoyable. Alongside the general positivity present in his videos, Boucher likewise makes viewers aware of just how much detail and effort goes into moviemaking.

That being said, because some of the movies Boucher talks about are rated R and filled with content concerns, parents will want to be aware that not every video on this channel will be appropriate for little ones—even despite Boucher’s best efforts to censor swears.

Kennedy Unthank studied journalism at the University of Missouri. He knew he wanted to write for a living when he won a contest for “best fantasy story” while in the 4th grade. What he didn’t know at the time, however, was that he was the only person to submit a story. Regardless, the seed was planted. Kennedy collects and plays board games in his free time, and he loves to talk about biblical apologetics. He’s also an avid cook. He thinks the ending of Lost “wasn’t that bad.”
