Looking through the video titles on Tonio Guajardo’s eponymous YouTube channel, you’d think he’s in for a bad time.
Videos like “I Stayed in America’s Worst Motels,” “I Tried Every 24-Hour Restaurant at 2AM” and “I Took America’s Worst-Rated Cruise” are among the many experiences he’s endured.
But those potentially distressing circumstances may just be the point. After all, his channel bio compels viewers to “find joy in unexpected places”. He’s got reason to look for that joy, too. Oftentimes, Guajardo discovers that these “worst-rated” experiences tend to be better than he anticipated.
That’s not all Guajardo does, however; in some videos, this YouTuber finds himself visiting unique locations or having experiences around the country—such as America’s largest mall or the spots where prominent computer wallpaper pictures were taken. In others, he challenges himself to 50-hour endurance tests, such as surviving on gas station food or not sleeping for that period of time.
But as Guajardo seeks out the worst to find the best, what’s the best and the worst viewers will find on his channel?
Guajardo’s wife, Holland, occasionally joins him for videos, and it’s clear that the two love each other very much. Additionally, many of his videos include him investigating a variety of products or locations to find the best experience for his wife and/or child. In other videos, Guajardo often compliments her. Plenty of his friends join him in his adventures, too.
Guajardo is a Christian, and he references his faith in many of his videos. Viewers will see him pray or thank God for His provision before many of his meals. Some videos contain Bible verses as well.
Guajardo is very kind to the many workers with whom he interacts at fast food locations, hotels and gas stations. Even when his experience at a location isn’t the best, he nevertheless treats the people with kindness. And his positivity extends through the screen, too, as he genuinely finds joy in small things.
Finally, Guajardo’s videos are filled with fun and family-friendly humor.
We heard one use of “crap.” Otherwise, we didn’t hear any crude language on the channel. After buying a shirt, Guajardo jokes that it’ll make his wife “want to have another child.”
Parents probably won’t want their kids replicating Guajardo’s challenge in which he stays awake for 50 hours.
Guajardo’s experienced a lot of the “worsts” around the country, which might cause some parents to wonder if his channel might follow suit, content-wise. But parents needn’t worry.
On the contrary, if your family’s goal is, like Guajardo, to find joy in unexpected places, you may just find it on this channel, which offers entertaining videos that the whole family can enjoy.
Kennedy Unthank studied journalism at the University of Missouri. He knew he wanted to write for a living when he won a contest for “best fantasy story” while in the 4th grade. What he didn’t know at the time, however, was that he was the only person to submit a story. Regardless, the seed was planted. Kennedy collects and plays board games in his free time, and he loves to talk about biblical apologetics. He’s also an avid cook. He thinks the ending of Lost “wasn’t that bad.”
