YouTube Channel Review

Ah, your significant other is at it again—they’re gaming. But you don’t really mind; you actually enjoy watching them play. Sometimes, though, you sort of wish that there was someone out there who reviewed games not for the sake of gamers—but for the sake of those who watch them.

That’s where Shelby and Matt, co-creators of Girlfriend Reviews, come in. The two (who are, as of the publishing of this review, now engaged) started their channel when Shelby began to watch Matt play Red Dead Redemption 2 … day by day. According to Shelby, Matt played it so much that he even began taking on the mannerisms of a cowboy—and she decided to make a video about it.

“So, this isn’t a review of Red Dead Redemption 2. This is a review of the experience of living with someone who plays Red Dead Redemption 2.”

The channel is dedicated to the backseat gamers—people who might not know much about how to play games but enjoy watching them regardless.

Positive Content

Each video provides a concise and humorous review for each game Shelby’s review is based around. Though the primary goal of each video is to make its audience laugh, Shelby provides legitimate questions, commendations and concerns about each game, too.

Shelby and Matt have a loving relationship, and we see evidence of that in each video. The two share in the creation of the vids, too, with Shelby voicing and Matt editing them.

Content Concerns

Girlfriend Reviews makes many sensual or otherwise adult jokes, and many of the games on the channel have adult themes, too. We see real and animated censored nudity (and in one case, uncensored animated male genitalia). In particularly violent games, we’ll endure a lot of heavy violence, blood and gore. Furthermore, swearing is frequent, with only the f-word being censored. Other words, including the s-word, “b–ch,” “a–” and g-dd–n,” are not censored.

One review regarding which horror game is scariest uses a how many “poop panties out of five” rating scale. Another video makes a parody of the song “Awesome God.” Many jokes reference various scenes from movies and television shows that may not be appropriate for children.

One video recounts how Matt and Shelby were the unfortunate target of a fabricated story in an attempt to defame their channel for giving a positive review to a video game the defamer disliked, and they show the many hateful comments they received as a result of it—even after proving said story was fabricated.

Channel Summary

Though Girlfriend Reviews creates well-researched and humorous videos, the channel’s frequent adult content makes it a hard channel to justify younger audiences watching.
