YouTube Channel Review
Marvel’s What If…? series explores what might have happened in the Marvel Cinematic Universe had its characters taken a slightly different route: Peggy Carter replaces Steve Rogers as Captain America, for instance. (Though being English, she’d be called Captain Britain.)
AlternateHistoryHub, run by Cody Franklin, explores similar ideas for our reality. What if Germany won the First World War? What if the events from the first Red Dawn movie happened in real life? What if the nuclear bomb was never invented?
Positive Content
AlternateHistoryHub doesn’t just make up these alternate histories on a whim; while some may seem unrealistic, Franklin likes to base his stories on many of the facts that surround the issue. For instance, when discussing an alternate history where Ross Perot won the 1992 presidential campaign, he explains how Perot might handle a congress full of party members that oppose him.
And to that end, though it may seem antithetical, AlternateHistoryHub actually teaches some genuine history (in order to set the context for Franklin’s stories) to viewers, too.
Content Concerns
A few videos deal with some sensitive topics, such as genocide and racism. One video shows a photo of cattle that had starved to death. And we occasionally hear a light swear, such as “a–” and “h—.” We also hear God’s and Jesus’ name taken in vain, and we hear acronyms like “lmao” and “wtf.”
Some videos deal with more controversial takes, like “What if Christianity Never Existed?”
Channel Summary
AlternateHistoryHub may have a couple sharp edges, but it generally remains a fun way to picture how the world just might have looked had single events changed. And despite those issues, Franklin’s channel might be an enjoyable watch for those looking to consider history—and the events that may have changed it.
Kennedy Unthank
Kennedy Unthank studied journalism at the University of Missouri. He knew he wanted to write for a living when he won a contest for “best fantasy story” while in the 4th grade. What he didn’t know at the time, however, was that he was the only person to submit a story. Regardless, the seed was planted. Kennedy collects and plays board games in his free time, and he loves to talk about biblical apologetics. He thinks the ending of Lost “wasn’t that bad.”
