Luskana is in trouble.

Power outages and tornados have devastated this Zambian city. And although these seem like natural disasters, someone sinister might be behind the catastrophes. Luckily, Mama K thinks she’s found the heroes to save the day.

Science genius Komana invents impressive gadgets, and her intelligence is crucial for the success of a team. Star athlete Zee’s skills might be useful for more than just soccer. New student and majorette Monde’s caring heart can bring peace to a diverse group. And troublemaker Temwe’s spunk and passion provide necessary motivation. Although their abilities differ, these four teenagers share a key similarity: In moments of crisis, they put themselves at risk to help others.

Recognizing their bravery, Mama K assembles the group to form Team 4. Komana, Zee, Monde and Temwe take on the undercover aliases, K-Bongo, Za-Mpezi, M-Kozo and T-Mlilo. Before she sends the girls to fight, Mama K equips them with new battle suits and unique weapons. But she tells them that their challenges will require noble character in addition to super-powered tech and abilities. Despite some flaws, Team 4 is prepared to act whenever Mama K calls.

Diverse Heros

Netflix is following through with its goal to give “more African storytellers an amplified voice on the global stage.” The launch of Supa Team 4 marks the streaming service’s first original African animated project. Created by Zambian writer Malenga Mulendema, the show introduces its viewers to four Zambian girls whose friendship and heroic acts comprise the show. Faced with universal struggles, the four heroes demonstrate that their adventures, adversaries and adversities can be just as engaging as their American counterparts’ exploits.

Although expected in a superhero show, Supa Team 4 contains some violence. The tense moments aren’t graphic, but younger audiences might find the falling helicopters, creepy villains and destructive tornadoes alarming. We also get some references to finding “inner peace” in the context of someone practicing martial arts. But aside from those minor issues, some bathroom humor and typical teenage sass, Supa Team 4 could provide super entertainment for your family.

Episode Reviews

Jul. 20, 2023 – S1, Ep1: “Team 4 in the Byu Byu”

Monde, Zee, Komana and Temwe gather for their school’s science fair. But when a disastrous tornado wreaks havoc, an unassuming juice vendor, Mama K, assembles the four girls to save the world. And they learn the tornado might be more than a natural disaster.

The girls originally question Mama K’s methods for assembling the team. They learn that Mama K had been spying on them (although Mama K prefers the phrase “gathering intelligence”), and Temwe worries that Mama K might be kidnapping them. Ultimately, Mama K he inspires the girls to become brave heroes with noble characters.

Monde, Zee, Komana and Temwe valiantly run toward danger. Although these risky situations aren’t particularly frightening, characters flee tornadoes and narrowly avoid being hit by heavy objects. In one case, parts of a building crush Komana’s sick father sending him to the hospital. We also see a fight with a villain.

While the girls typically behave honorably, Temwe sometimes disrespects the school’s principal, and Zee hits Temwe in the head with a soccer ball. The episode employs occasional mild bathroom humor, and we hear a mention of Mother Nature. As he films Zee playing soccer, we learn that Chipo has a crush on Monde.

Jul. 20, 2023 – S1, Ep2: “Hanger Management”

A swarm of metal-eating locusts isn’t the last of Team 4’s troubles. Temwe struggles to control her anger; and if she loses her temper again, she’ll be expelled from school. Luckily, the group’s comradery helps them overcome both problems.

Encounters with another student, Marjory, and the school’s principal spur Temwe’s anger. Temwe pushes Marjory who retaliates by calling her “half pint.” When Temwe damages school property, the principal suspends her. Mama K teaches Temwe important lessons about controlling her anger, and Monde suggests that Temwe should practice martial arts to help her find her “calm center.” Through these exercises, Temwe finds “inner peace.”

While Temwe struggles through self-discovery, the rest of the team liberates Luskana from locusts. In battles against the locusts, characters narrowly miss being crushed by wreckage, and Monde falls from a flying helicopter. Later, the helicopter crashes with someone still inside (though that character is unharmed).

Temwe messily scarfs down food, and she is seen managing her anger by punching a stuffed dummy. One character uses the word, “diss.”
