When Universal Studios announced it would produce a follow-up to the sexually preoccupied smash American Pie, one of its stars, Tara Reid, wondered, “How can you make a sequel? Everyone lost their virginity in the first one. What’s next?” As it turns out, a lot more sex. American Pie 2 finds the same herd of teenagers adjusting to life after high school by going all-out to pad their sexual résumés.
It’s summer break. A year of college behind them, Jim and his buddies rent a beach house and plan the party to end all parties.
Aside from a case of mistaken identity involving a trombone recital, just about every scene and line of dialogue in this corrupt movie—from a young man’s interest in Buddhist meditation, to a seemingly endless supply of alcohol—relates to satisfying overactive libidos.
One guy is shown having phone sex with his girlfriend. Another feeds an unhealthy obsession with his pal’s mom. The kinkiest of the bunch is Stifler, whose unfettered experimentation includes a threesome and lusting over lesbians. Meanwhile, Jim’s fascination with pornography leads to more masturbatory humiliation.
Promiscuity is the norm. No form of gratification is taboo. Matter-of-fact sex chat occurs in mixed company. It’s all aggravated by raw language, obscene gestures and nudity. We may still see a more bankrupt film released this year, but it will be hard pressed to undermine as many teens’ value systems as this second helping of American Pie.
