For a long time—longer than maybe I want to admit, even—my professional life has revolved around helping families navigate this bewildering world of entertainment and technology we live in. Those twin influences are only getting stronger as time goes on: Kids and teens have so many shows to watch, music to listen to, games to play, and a dizzying array of ways to connect with it all (not to mention with their friends). In 2015, the average teen spent nine hours a day consuming media. And those numbers are probably only going up.
I’m not the only one concerned about such things, of course. I have lots of company. Kirk Cameron’s movie, Connect, deals heavily with subjects like technology and social media: It came out on video earlier this week. (I talked with Cameron about the project on this very blog.)
And then there is, of course, Dr. Kathy Koch, founder of Celebrate Kids, Inc., and one of the country’s foremost experts on media and technology and how they intersect with teens. In fact, she just recently published a book titled “Screens and Teens.” She was just on Focus on the Family’s own daily broadcast, and I had a chance to talk with her, too. She had some fantastic, and timely, things to say.
