Sure, football technically doesn’t have much to do with faith. In fact, I’ve heard it rumored that some Christians (not me, of course) might’ve been tempted to skip church if it interfered with an important game.
But there’s also no question that faith and football share a surprisingly robust connection. Many professional football players are professing Christians—in fact, you can read about a few of them in our blog, “8 Christian Football Players to Watch This NFL Season.” But many a Christian filmmaker has used the gridiron as the setting for a film, too.
Why have the two been so intertwined? Why does the sport form such an effective cinematic crucible for those grappling with spiritual issues? Fellow football fans Adam Holz and Bret Eckelberry join me to address those questions and many, many more.
And then when we’re done talking about faith on the football field, we discuss the latest God’s Not Dead movie—where faith lands at the center of a congressional race. It’s called God’s Not Dead: In God We Trust, and it’s out in theaters today. Adam and I talk all about it.

Somewhat related, regarding all those “Christian sports movies,” I’d always wondered what would happen if *both* teams in the movie, the underdog and the reigning-but-alienating champions, both wore their religious faith on their shoulder but were each convinced that God was actually on their side.
