The Plugged In Show, Episode 117: What’s Up With All Those Sports Betting Ads? (Also, Death on the Nile!)

LISTEN TO THE PLUGGED IN SHOW, EPISODE 117

We’d like to think that listening to The Plugged In Show is never a gamble. We try to give you an informative, entertaining show each week. And if we fall short every once in a while? Well, at least it’s free, right?

But you can bet that the culture offers loads of other ways for you to make a quick buck or, more likely, separate you from your cash. And many of us saw advertisements for one such way this past Sunday during the Super Bowl.

Online sports betting books seem to be all the rage right now, and the NFL is all in—partnering with seven different outlets. And that professional league is hardly alone. Last year, Americans threw more than $52.7 billion into sports betting—double the amount from the year before. Does that explosion of growth tell us anything about the culture itself? And just how should parents engage with this skyrocketing phenomenon? Listen to our conversation, and you’ll be a surefire winner.

We’ll also talk about a movie that’s making a real killing at the box office: Death on the Nile, Kenneth Branagh’s latest adaptation of a classic Agatha Christie murder mystery. I promise we won’t divulge whodunit, but we will talk about what parents should be mindful of.

Yep, there’s no De-Nile-ing that this will be a fantastic episode! Sail in with your own thoughts on Facebook and Instagram, or shoot us an email at [email protected]. And take a look at some more helpful resources below.

  1. -Back in the 90s, courtesy of my mom’s exboyfriend, I got introduced to horse racing and would love going to the various tracks like Santa Anita and Hollywood Park. Looking at the horses in their stalls, eating the delicious dogs and nachos, and of course betting as well. I never won that much except for five here and there, but one time at the breeder’s cup I won a trifecta which earned me enough money to buy me a copy of Stephen King’s insomnia at my local bookstore. But really it was the thrill of the race and the yummy food and the gorgeous looking horses that had the most appeal for me. Plus I’ve been to Laughlin three times thanks to said exboyfriend and was even at Vegas once to celebrate my sister’s wedding. I played nothing but the slots and won at most thirty dollars, but that’s the extent of my gambling life. Not much to speak of at all I think.
