Snrk. Wha? Who? Oh, sorry. Must’ve dozed off there for a minute. With no new releases in theaters this weekend, the box office derby felt a wee bit snoozy.
The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 1 scored a third consecutive win, earning an estimated $16.9 million. Sure, that’s about 60% less than Breaking Dawn earned last week, which in turn was 71% less than it had earned the week before. It’s not like Breaking Dawn’s taking the Avatar train, here. Still, the $247 million Twilight’s latest film is enough to give its makers a nice, sparkly sheen.
That quarter-of-a-billion take is enough to make Breaking Dawn the fourth highest-grossing film of the year in North America, just a smidge behind The Hangover Part II ($254 million). It’ll likely overtake the R-rated comedy by the time 2011 comes to a close, but Edward, Bella et al have little shot of catching the year’s biggest of big boys: Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 reigns supreme with $381 million, while Transformers: Dark of the Moon slots into second with $352 mil.
The Muppets made another $11.2 million to hold onto second place—a steep 62% drop over what the glamorous foam-and-felt mittens movie did the week before. Other family-oriented entrants held their ground a bit better: Martin Scorcese’s Hugo, with $7.6 million, moved from fifth to third place (thanks, in part, to grabbing about 560 more screens). Arthur Christmas held to fourth with a $7.4 million present. Happy Feet Two, with $6 million, rounded out the week’s Top 5.
Will the box office get a bit more lively next weekend? Well, maybe a bit. New Year’s Eve is trundling out to theaters on Friday, oddly enough, but it looks like we’ll have to wait for Christmas before the annual rush of Oscar winners floods theaters.
