Movie Monday: ‘Ant-Man’ Wins Second Straight Weekend, ‘Jesus Revolution’ Overperforms

Marvel’s tiniest superheroes continue to make the biggest impression in theaters—but not as big as Marvel might have hoped. Meanwhile, some other, smaller films earned some attention, too.

Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania topped the weekend box-office tally for the second-straight frame, banking another $32 million. That boosted its North American gross to $167.3 million. Add in its overseas earnings, and Quantumania stands relatively tall at $363.6 million.

Or, at least it would … if it wasn’t a Marvel superhero film. The Marvel Cinematic Universe has been like a cinematic ATM for its overlord Disney. But Quantumania’s sour reviews came with a 67% weekend-over-weekend drop, the steepest second-week dip in MCU history.

Have we reached the point of over-saturation in superhero cinema? We’ve got plenty of other superhero flicks on the docket to see.

Quantumania was joined by a pair of wide-release debuts. Cocaine Bear, an R-rated comedy with almost as many flying intestinal tracts as laughs, cracked into second place with about $23.1 million in estimated earnings.

But let’s spend a little more time with Jesus Revolution, wherein I Can Only Imagine director Jon Erwin and Brent McCorkle turned the cameras to the improbable Christian revival that took place in the waning days of the Flower Power movement.

Starring Jonathan Roumie (familiar as Jesus to fans of The Chosen) and Kelsey Grammer, Jesus Revolution was expected to corral anywhere from $6 million to $7 million. Not so fast, box-office prognosticators! Revolution took in more than $15.5 million to finish third for the week.

And while secular reviewers didn’t find the film that revolutionary, let’s be honest: The subject matter would be a hard sell for many of them. Those who buy the tickets loved the thing (as did Plugged In). Jesus Revolution is thus far registering a 99% “freshness” rating from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes and an A+ mark from CinemaScore. We’re told that, with that glowing grade, Jon Erwin becomes the very first director ever to earn four straight A+ CinemaScore grades.

Avatar: The Way of Water, continues to float around the Top Five, docking in at No. 4 with $4.7 million. And Puss in Boots: The Last Wish shows that there’s still plenty of life left in this cat, too. It earned $4.1 million to close out the Top Five.
