Movie Monday: ‘Devil Wears Prada 2’ Knocks Around ‘Mortal Kombat II’

The fighters in Mortal Kombat have a bevy of creative attacks at their disposal, from jets of fire to balls of ice to ripping spines straight out of their opponents’ bodies. But all these combatants’ fearsome moves fell short against its’ opponent’s overpowering sense of fashion.

For the second straight weekend, The Devil Wears Prada 2 took the box office title, outdueling its fellow sequel Mortal Kombat II. Prada 2 gathered up $43 million from the North American runway, pushing its domestic total to $144.8 million and its worldwide gross to a very tidy $433.2 million.

Prada’s performance made the movie’s overlords at Disney quite happy as well. The Mouse House became the first studio this year to gross more than $2 billion at the box office. Who needs a wishing star when you’ve got a cash-making machine on hand?

Mortal Kombat II didn’t finish much behind its chic competitor. The latest cinematic adaptation to one of the world’s most notoriously bloody video games snagged an estimated $40 million stateside with its gory grapplers. It earned another $23 million overseas to push its overall tally to $63 million. That’s a fairly middling return, according to prognosticators, but no matter: Warner Bros. has already looked at the future Mortal Kombat III and told it, “Get over here!”

Michael continues to rock with audiences, earning another $36.5 million to finish third. The musical biopic has now earned $240.5 million domestically and $577.4 million worldwide.

The Sheep Detectives landed in fourth place, sheering its audiences for $15.9 million. It earned another $12.1 million internationally for a worldwide gross of $28 million. Not great, but not baaaad. And with Sheep Detectives being a family movie, it may have longer wooly legs than some. Now, imagine every dollar being a sheep. Now, imagine them leaping over a fence, one by one, and … you’re asleep, aren’t you?

Well, wake up, because we’re not done yet! The concert movie Billie Eilish: Hit Me Hard and Soft—The Tour Live in 3D closes out the weekend’s top five with $7.5 million. That might not be everything that Eilish wanted, but it’s more than enough to buy lunch.
