Movie Monday: ‘The Devil Wears Prada 2’ Takes the Crown

Miranda Priestly’s fictional fashion mag Runway has seen better days in The Devil Wears Prada 2. But the movie comported itself just fine.

The sequel strode down its box-office runway with aplomb, sashaying to a $77 million opening weekend in North America. But the film really flexed its financial muscles overseas, earning $156.6 million and bringing its worldwide gross to a staggering $233.6 million. Why, that’s almost enough to buy a nice Gucci handbag. Almost.

What did the musical biopic Michael want to do to Prada in the weekend’s box-office tourney? Beat it, of course. But since Prada made off with the win like a smooth criminal, Michael had to stop when it got enough—which was, in this case, another $54 million stateside. That’s hardly bad: Indeed, that cash outlay was strong enough to finish second in the standings and pushed the film’s overall domestic tally to $183.8 million. And if we look at Michael’s worldwide gross, it stands at $423.9 million. Easy as ABC.

A couple of familiar titles remain dangerous in their own right. The Super Mario Galaxy Movie continues to bounce around the box-office stratosphere, collecting $12.1 million to pad its domestic gross to $402.7 million. Worldwide, it has earned $894.2 million—still a good way from the $1 billion mark, but it’s not out of the question.

Project Hail Mary continues to hold its own orbit well, earning another $8.6 million. Hail Mary has now collected $318.3 million in North America and $638.4 million globally.

The atmospheric horror flick Hokum rounded out the weekend’s top five, earning $6.4 million. That should be enough to refurbish the movie’s honeymoon suite (and keep it supplied with witch repellant).

Angel’s Animal Farm earned an estimated $3.4 million to fall just outside the top five. Which, come to think of it, might’ve made Animal Farm author George Orwell happy. Capitalism? Bah.

Two other new releases landed inside the weekend’s top 10. Disaster movie Deep Water crashed and swam to $2.2 million to finish eighth. And the clunkily named anime That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime the Movie: Tears of the Azure Sea earned $1 million to finish ninth.
