When I Can Only Imagine released in March 2018, even the most ardent of MercyMe fans may have found it difficult to, ahem, imagine the scope of the film’s smashing success. The Christian biopic, which details the true story behind the hit song of the same name, corralled $83 million domestically—nearly 12 times its budget.
(It has also held strongly in the minds of Christian moviegoers since then, grabbing a place among the final eight films in last year’s Christian Movie Madness bracket.)
With such runaway success, it’d be no surprise to hear that a sequel was on the horizon. And wouldn’t you know it, I Can Only Imagine 2 will be released in theaters in less than two weeks on February 20.
But a sequel wasn’t always in the cards. In fact, some of the major players of I Can Only Imagine were determined not to make a sequel.
Why? Well, despite plenty of offers (including a Broadway musical based on the story of the first film), I Can Only Imagine told a satisfying and complete narrative arc. Director Andrew Erwin wasn’t keen on a cinematic follow-up unless it had a resonant story. MercyMe’s Bart Millard, the inspiration for the film, felt the same way.
But to their surprise, a story did come along—a story that demanded to be told. Thus, I Can Only Imagine 2 was born, based on the creation of another hit MercyMe song and centered around another challenging (but redemptive) father-and-son relationship.
I got the chance to sit down with some of those involved in the making of I Can Only Imagine 2, including Bart Millard, John Michael Finley, Milo Ventimiglia and more. Check those videos out below. We hope you enjoy them!
