New Release Roundtable: ‘Avatar: Fire and Ash’ and ‘David’

avatar fire and ash and david

The Avatar franchise returns to movie screens this Friday with Avatar: Fire and Ash. The third film in director James Cameron’s billion-dollar franchise is sure to be visually spectacular. But will it prove to be a story worth telling and—as I’ll admit I’ve had some difficulty doing with previous entries in the franchise—remembering?

But that’s not the only film coming out this week!

From the immaculately rendered world of Pandora we travel to the ancient Kingdom of Israel for Angel Studios’ David. This PG, animated musical tells the story of David’s rise to power, from his confrontation with Goliath to his crowning as king. It’s interspersed with songs performed by Christian music heavyweights like Phil Wickham and Lauren Daigle.

For a spoiler-free discussion of these two upcoming films, I sat down with Paul Asay, Bob Hoose and Kennedy Unthank. Did these movies work? What were the positives? And what content concerns should parents be aware of before whisking the family off to the theater?

  1. The reviews I’m reading about the new “Avatar” movie are a bit dismaying. The complaints have pretty much the same: The film is rather boring, it doesn’t cover any new ground, and that James Cameron is pretty much coasting on his own inertia. I’ll probably spring for the 3D glasses anyway.

    1. All of these are fair complaints. I thought the movie was fine and I have no desire to watch it or any of the upcoming ones. I think the premise has long since worn itself out

  2. I absolutely love the first two Avatars so I’m in for this third one no question. I’m expecting more of the same which isn’t a bad thing in my opinion. As long as the visuals are as eye popping as always and the story and characters are as intriguing as ever with lots of emotion and things to think about, then I’m sure I’ll love this one too. Probably won’t be seeing it till after Christmas, but I will be seeing it indubitably.

    1. I’m gonna let you know, I watched the movie today and had a lot of issues with the frame rate. Not solely because it kept alternating between a high rate and a low rate (though I did find it distracting) but because many scenes outright looked like they were chugging, like they were being played on a device that could not keep up, resulting in frame drops.

      1. I have no clue what you’re talking about. Don’t know anything about frame rates or frame drops or anything else like that. All I know is I got a 20 dollar Regal gift card from my mom for Christmas, so I’ll be using part of it on Tuesday for Avatar when Regal club members get tickets for only seven bucks on Tuesday’s only. With the remainder I’ll probably use for another movie or two sometime in the future, but short of dying nothing can stop me from seeing Avatar fire and ash on the big screen. Regal has never let me down before when it comes to sound or picture quality.
