Episode 279: The Chosen Sits Down for The Last Supper—and Plugged In Sits Down With the Cast

LISTEN TO THE PLUGGED IN SHOW, EPISODE 279

In 2017, Dallas Jenkins—fresh off the underwhelming release of The Resurrection of Gavin Stone—created a short, Christmas-themed film called “The Shepherd.” Jenkins hoped to screen it on Christmas Eve at his home church. But he also thought it might just serve as a springboard for a more audacious plan: A multi-season television series based on the life of Jesus.

Well, the small seed that was “The Shepherd” grew into The Chosen, now in its fifth season. As was the case last year, it’ll be released in theaters before migrating to The Chosen app, with the first installment, The Chosen: The Last Supper—Part One, hitting the big screen this weekend.

That theatrical release points to what a force The Chosen has become in the world of Christian entertainment. Last year, the cinematic versions of The Chosen made millions in theaters. And the creators behind Prime Video’s own biblically based show, House of David, point to The Chosen as one of the show’s inspirations.

Why has the show been so influential? We bat that question around on today’s podcast, gathering together our own panel of Chosen experts: Adam Holz, Kennedy Unthank and myself.

But we won’t be talking just amongst ourselves. I also had chance to chat with show creator Dallas Jenkins and actor Jonathan Roumie, who plays Jesus in The Chosen. The latter has a hefty responsibility, and we talk to Roumie about what it means to play Christ—and what it has meant to him personally.

And then, as always, we’d love to hear from you, too. Are you a fan of The Chosen? What have you thought about how the show deals with Scripture? Do you feel the series adds to an understanding of the Bible? Or does it detract from it? We’d love to hear your thoughts on Facebook and Instagram. You can leave us a voice message on The Plugged In Show homepage. You can send us an email at team@thepluggedinshow.com. Or just comment down below.

And then, be sure to check out next week’s show. A Minecraft Movie is just around the corner, and we’ll talk with a couple of Minecraft experts about the game that started it all.

One Response

  1. The Chosen is not at all true to the bible and I am disappointed it is watched so much. Dallas Jenkins even said in his interview that the show is only 5% based on the bible.
