Granted, The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 2 lost nearly 70% of its audience this weekend. But it still managed to clear an estimated $43.1 million to win the box office derby for the second straight week. In the span of 10 days, those effervescent vamps have earned nearly $227 million, making Breaking Dawn – Part 2 the sixth most popular flick of the year—and it’ll almost certainly zip past fifth-place Brave ($236.9 million) before we meet again next Monday.
But Pixar’s (ahem) brave little heroine might slide farther yet. Skyfall, which finished second to Breaking Dawn – Part 2 for the week with $36 million, is also nipping at Dawn’s heels in the year-end contest with $221.7 million. And here’s the thing: it’s losing less of its audience, week-over-week, than Dawn, which means it could potentially pass both it and Brave in the coming days. For being 50 years old, James Bond has some spring in his step yet.
Speaking of spry, well-dressed dudes with serious cinematic appeal, Lincoln might’ve had the most impressive weekend of them all (in a way). Sure, Steven Spielberg’s docudrama of the 16th American president finished third with $25 million—barely within shouting distance of Bond and Bella. But unlike Dawn and Skyfall, Lincoln actually made more money this week than it did last.
Two newcomers, Rise of the Guardians and Life of Pi, finished fourth and fifth respectively (both bolstered by a 3-D upcharge in some cases). Guardians, featuring a bevy of animated holiday heroes, earned about $24 million, while Pi floated home with $22 mil.
Red Dawn, the week’s other major release, lost its box-office battle, earning just $14.6 million for seventh place. And in narrow release, Hitchcock scared up about $300,000 on 17 screens.
Final Figures Update: 1. The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 2, $43.6 million; 2. Skyfall, $35.5 million; 3. $25.7 million; 4. Rise of the Guardians, $23.8 million; 5. Life of Pi, $22.5 million. Red Dawn settled in a bit lower than expected with $14.3 million, but still finished seventh. Hitchcock earned about $288,000.
