Movie Monday: Hop

The animated Easter movie Hop bounded to first place at the box office this weekend, stuffing $38.1 million into its multi-hued basket. The opening had its makers over at Universal Pictures jumping for joy: The holiday flick may not have delved into the true meaning of Easter, but it did outperform its modest expectations and may (if the estimates hold) top Rango as owner of the year’s highest weekend gross.

The victory also sets British comedian Russell Brand up for a decidedly dandy April: Voicing Hop’s leading bunny, E.B., Brand will also star in Arthur, to be released April 8 in more than 3,000 theaters. Anyone wanna bet we’ll be chatting about Brand next weekend, too?

Freaky thriller Source Code finished a distant second—a definite tortoise to Hop’s hare—with $15 million, while the low-budget horror flick Insidious finished third with $13.5 million. Last week’s box-office titlist, Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Rodrick Rules, tumbled all the way down to fourth with $10.2 million.
