Movie Monday: Wimpy Kid Thumps Sucker Punch

Leave it to a wimpy kid to win a weak weekend. Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Rodrick Rules floored Zack Snyder’s newest stylized rumble Sucker Punch to claim the box office belt this week. Perhaps Wimpy took some tips from the NCAA tourney’s VCU this weekend, as its upset victory wasn’t even that close: Wimpy earned an estimated $24.4 million to Punch’s $19 million. Limitless slid into third with $15.2 mil.

The folks over at Warner Brothers must be a little nervous, considering they spent a reported $82 million making Punch—particularly since fanboy films typically don’t have much staying power. But most reviewers, including our own Plugged In reviewer, didn’t think the film deserved any better.

So was the weekend a triumph for family-friendly entertainment? Well, not exactly. Certainly Wimpy catered to kids, and it has already made its reported $21 million budget back. But Plugged In reviewer Adam Holz thought Wimpy was a sadly disappointing combination of bad behavior and toilet humor—saying it’s about as “appropriate for young audiences as a 4th-grade school teacher lecturing on proctology.” Ick.

Maybe things will get a bit more interesting next weekend, when the animated Hop bounds into theaters, along with the PG-13 sci-fi thriller Source Code. Oh, and if you’ve been waiting for the PG-13 version of The King’s Speech to be released, it’ll be out next weekend, too.
