Games are filled with content. Perhaps that’s why many YouTube content creators have gotten famous for playing them, and more still have grown in popularity for parodying them. But unlike channels like Viva La Dirt League, which create live-action skits to joke about games, CircleToonsHD creates animations to accomplish that goal.
Christian, the animator behind CircleToonsHD, equips himself with nothing more than MS Paint in order to create his skits. Because of the simple software, there’s often not too much actual animated movement. But Christian makes up for it with jarring camera movements, which zoom across the painted documents. Through his humor and style, though his videos are typically hardly over a minute long, CircleToonsHD has amassed (as of posting) more than two million subscribers.
But like many of the games referenced on CircleToonsHD, Christian’s content is often filled with content concerns that parents will want to be aware of—the foremost of these heavy swearing.
The animation on CircleToonsHD is unique and engaging, and much of the general humor found in the channel’s videos is quite fun—especially for those who understand the references that the channel is making. These are primarily focused on various video games, though some reference other relevant things, such as NFTs, movie logic and general life.
CircleToonsHD writes a warning in the “About” section of his YouTube channel: “All content on this channel is not directed towards or intended for audiences below 13 years of age. Content may include mature language, humor, themes or subjects.” And after reviewing the channel, this is less of a warning than a promise.
Viewers will see animations of characters being slashed and shot, fake blood and the occasional reference to sexual content. Additionally, heavy swearing is frequent, including the f-word and s-word as well as many misuses of God’s name, including “g-dd–n.” Jesus’ name is also inappropriately used.
CircleToonsHD will resonate with many gamers who’ve experienced the things the content creator is referencing, and they’ll certainly appreciate the cleverness with which he tackles the topics. But with heavy swearing and mature themes, viewers will want to proceed with caution, lest they be met with a terrible fate.
Though he was born in Kansas, Kennedy Unthank betrayed his roots by leaving the wheat behind to study journalism at the University of Missouri. He knew he wanted to write for a living when he won a contest for “best fantasy story” while in the 4th grade. What he didn’t know at the time, however, was that he was the only person to submit a story. Regardless, the seed was planted. Kennedy collects and plays board games in his free time, and he loves to talk about biblical apologetics and hermeneutics.
