And that’s his counsel, not mine, on his first U.S. chart-topper: “Now listen to me baby,” the English singer/R&B crooner advises against the backdrop of pulsating, synthesized Europop dance beats, “I don’t wanna deceive you/If you fall for me/ … I might tear you apart.”
Well, at least he’s honest, right? Right?
To ram home that point, the chorus repeats—and I do mean repeats, as in 16 times—Taio’s prophecy about where things are likely to end up: “I’m only gonna break break your, break break your heart.”
Got it. Note to every girl within a continent or two: He’s going to break your heart. So if you’re unwise enough to consider pursuing this avowed playa, it seems, you’ll never be able to say you weren’t aware of the terms up front—terms Taio spells out sans apology.
About the best you can say about Taio’s approach to romance is that he knows sooner or later he’s going to have to pay the price for his self-serving ways. He sings, “And I know karma’s gonna get me back for being so cold.”
To hear Taio talk, though, you’d think that his song (which also features a guest performance by Ludacris) is an unselfish public service announcement. He told bluesandsoul.com, “The meaning behind the song obviously is quite self-explanatory. It’s about breaking a girl’s heart, but in a way that’s kinda not on purpose. It’s more that I’m just a single guy, trying to be single and trying to remain single. And sometimes, when you are in that place, you get girls who wanna be a part of what you’re about—but because you’re not really ready for a relationship, those girls can end up being heartbroken. So what I’m basically saying is, ‘I might just break your heart. But I’m only gonna break your heart if you come through this way right now.'”
