Album Review

Bruno Mars is back. But this time, it’s not as a solo artist. He’s teamed up with rapper, singer and songwriter Anderson .Paak to form the new retro-sounding supergroup Silk Sonic.

The duo’s first release, the love song “Leave the Door Open,” has a silky-smooth R&B vibe. It soared to the top slot on YouTube’s music video chart upon release, and it’s climbing other charts currently as well.

Positive Content

Really, the only good thing that we might say is that Mars and .Paak keep suggestive lyrics dialed down to a PG-13 level. And that hasn’t always been the case with some the more graphic material that Mars, in particular, has released in the past.

Content Concerns

This song is about one thing: a man who wants to romance his lover (“What you doin’?/Where you at?/Oh, you got plans?/Don’t say that”) with a little wine, rose petals, a bathtub and dancing (“We should be dancin’, romancin’”).

And whenever she’s ready to be intimate, he’ll be ready too: “So if you tryna lay in these arms/I’ma leave the door open.” Be it with food (“And if you’re hungry girl, I got filets”) or marijuana (“If you smoke/I got the haze”).

Track Summary

It’s been nearly five years since Bruno Mars has released an album. So his new collaboration with Anderson .Paak came to fans as quite the surprise—especially given the song’s throwback sound.

As for this song’s lyrical content, well, “Leave the Door Open” is obviously a song that’s really only about one thing. It doesn’t drift into explicit imagery. But we certainly know what’s going on here as a man tries to sweet-talk his love interest into bed—even if it takes wine, marijuana, steak, dancing and a bath together to seal the deal.
