Album Review

Bouncy, lighthearted sounds are usually what most people flock to for a summer song. K-pop artist NewJeans provides just that in their single, “Super Shy.”

This South Korean girls group, composed of singers Minji, Hanni, Danielle, Haerin and Hyein (who range from 17-19 years old), came on the music scene in 2022 with their self-titled EP. Since then, they’ve been climbing in popularity.

These young women embody the typical K-pop sound in their English/Korean track, “Super Shy,” currently sitting at No. 2 on YouTube’s music chart. The song is all about liking a boy but being too bashful to tell him.

POSITIVE CONTENT

This is your typical girl-likes-boy story at the beginning of a movie where the girl is too scared to tell the boy just how she feels (“I’m super shy, super shy/I wanna tell you but I’m super shy”).

Her intention is to one day go out with this boy (“And I wanna go out with you/Find a lil spot/Just sit and talk/Looking pretty”) and become his girlfriend (“But wait a minute while I make you mine”), but right now he doesn’t even know who she is(“You don’t even know my name, do ya?”).

CONTENT CONCERNS

Lyrically, none.

However, in the video, girls sport crop tops and sports bras as they work out and perform a choreographed dance in a park.

TRACK SUMMARY

It’s oddly refreshing to listen to a song that has no real lyrical issues. This song isn’t aggressive or sexually suggestive as many songs are these days. And not only is this really rare for music, but more so for YouTube’s music charts, which seem to house only vulgar tunes at the top.

Both the sounds and the lyrics here feel innocent with a touch of flirtation mixed in–a very innocuous schoolgirl vibe. So while this may not be the song for you or your family, it’s certainly safe enough for a family to listen to.
