Album Review

Kane Brown epitomizes “new” country. No old school here. If you’re looking for traditional country, Kane Brown doesn’t fit the bill. Instead, he blends chill island-like vibes with country-pop sounds.

Brown’s latest single, “Weekend,” is a dancey, summery thing. In fact, you could almost imagine it crossing over to a different kind of radio station entirely—one that’s not strictly country.

We still get conversations about fishin’ and drinkin’ (as well as Brown’s signature twangy Southern accent), but it’s not hard to imagine hearing this song in a club or while you’re sitting on a tractor.

Is It Friday Yet?

After a long week at work, Kane wants to know where he’s going next, back to his place or to his lover’s (“It’s 4:30 Friday, I get off at 5:00/Am I coming to your place, you coming to mine?”) because he has the perfect combination prepared to disconnect from work (“Got a bottle of Jack and cheap red wine/ … Wanna open em up, close all the doors/Spin you around that kitchen floor”).

Brown’s “been waitin’ for” the weekend, and now that it’s here, he’d rather be “sippin’ something on the cheap end,” or “skinny dippin’ in the deep end” or maybe even “bass fishin’ with your feet in.”

And if those don’t sound like plausible options, the two of them can just binge “watch a whole season of Seinfeld and Friends,” while Kane simultaneously notices “that afternoon sun shining in/Right through the blinds and onto your skin.”

Whatever these lovers choose, they’re sure to include some intimate moments (“Keep that cherry red lipstick sticking on me”) and time in bed together (“Tangled up in the sheets … /Goose bumps just a creepin’.”)

But the most important thing, Kane says, is simply being “right here with you and you with me.”

Just Chillin’

Some songs make you want to stay in summer mode forever. I know that, personally, there’s nowhere I’d rather be than sitting on the beach with a good book.

The “Weekend” aspires to being that kind of track. It’s been dubbed the “perfect chillin’ song” and appropriately so, because that’s what it’s all about: Just hanging out for the weekend.

That suggestion could mean different things to different people. But for Kane Brown, his idea of a perfect weekend—at least according to this song—is drinking, unwinding inside or in the great outdoors, and spending some quality time in between the sheets.
