With wall-to-wall bad news out there shaking us by the collar every day—whether it’s the recession, crime rates or the latest insanities on one coast or the other—well, as Josh Turner says, it can seem like “the whole wide world has gone crazy.”
But fear not. Turner isn’t about to leave his fans in the lurch. He’s got some bouncy, up-tempo advice to deliver in the form of his latest No. 1 country hit, “Why Don’t We Just Dance.”
And let’s face it, this fresh-faced country boy next door has plenty to sing and dance about. He’s been cheerily cutting a rug ever since he made it big in 2003 with the hit single “Long Black Train” and a platinum-selling album bearing the same name.
On his latest hit, the title pretty much says it all. Push the lousy news and the sofa aside, turn on the stereo, grab your honey, and dance your blues away. “Just a little bitty living room ain’t gonna look like much,” he instructs us, “But when the lights go down and we move the couch/It’s gonna be more than enough/ … So baby why don’t we just dance.”
Between Turner’s über-smooth bass and the tune’s barroom piano, fiddle fills and steel guitar twang, you can’t help but want to tap your feet and do a little “bouncing off the wall” yourself.
The track’s accompanying video keeps the message light-footed, carefree and escapist as well. In it, we see a couple dancing around the house and showcasing dancing steps representative of everything from the ’50s to today.
This is smooth sailing at its finest. Or maybe smooth swaying would be closer to the mark.
