Emerging artist John K released his smash hit “If We Never Met” back in 2019. But he’s recently paired up with country star Kelsea Ballerini for a fresh rendition of his original.
With a pop driven, Chainsmokers-meets-Lauv vibe, John K and Ballerini imagine what their lives would have been like had they never found their significant others.
John K bluntly confesses that his life would have consisted of drunken one-night stands and shallow relationships had he never met his now girlfriend: “I’d be drunk, waking up in someone else’s bed/I’d be lost in a crowded room of fake friends/I wouldn’t even know what love is.”
But he’s so thankful that she took a chance on him (“What if you never told your family you were leaving”) because now he’s blissfully happy (“But when I put it all together/It all comes back to you/I love it when the only light is me, you, and the moon”).
Ballerini seconds John K’s thoughts, realizing that staying at a party one night led to her meeting her own soulmate: “What if I would’ve left the party?/What if you never look twice when you saw me?/In your favorite sweater/It must’ve been for a reason.”
We’ve all thought back and wondered “What if?” And, admittedly, sometimes that thought can lead down an unwise mental path. But in this case it’s actually quite sweet.
Both John K and Ballerini realize that their lives could have ended up drastically different had they never met their soulmates. And the two of them use this time (although John does mention alcohol and one-night stands) to appreciate where they are now.
