Album Review

In Christ, we are free. This truth is the foundation of a new release by Christian artist and Baylor alum Forrest Frank, featuring Christian rapper and singer Hulvey.

Frank, 27, is best known for his musical endeavors in his genre-blending band Surfaces, but his recent pairing with Hulvey is making its way through the Christian music charts. This gospel single, “no longer bound,” (stylized without capitalization) reminds listeners that though sin may be part of our past, it has no hold over us in our future in Christ.

Positive Content

Frank declares that God came to “set us free” and that the singer is “no longer bound.” Hulvey seconds this, saying that things like lust (“I was Timmy Turner, always chasin’ after Vicky”) and hopelessness (Took me to his fountain, gave me peace and chose to cleanse me up”) have no place in his life in Christ.

Both men understand that Christ’s sacrifice is a display of his love (“Nothing I could ever do/To separate my love from you”) and faithfulness toward us (Now I’m testifyin’ of Your greatness, that’s a different love”).

Content Concerns

None.

Track Summary

Jesus came to set us free and we are no longer bound. This is, as Christians know, the good news. For those of us who have grown up in the Church, we’ve heard this message in so many different ways that we often forget just how powerful it really is. That’s why this track stands out: It expresses the beauty and truth of the gospel with a blending of genres that aren’t often highlighted by mainstream media.
