Ed Sheeran and Elton John are embracing the holiday spirit with their latest single called “Merry Christmas.” And it’s made for a merry Christmas for both of them already. This dynamic duo have already reached the top of the charts with their ode to all things seasonal, as well as their positive message to listeners to seek healing after a year of hardships.
Sheeran and John sing about enjoying the holidays – “Build the fire and gather ‘round the tree” – cherishing special moments – “And we’ll all sing along to the song/Just having so much fun” – and healing from the losses that many have experienced this past year – “I know there’s been pain this year, but it’s time to let it go/Next year, you never know.”
Sheeran and John both sing that they and their respective partners have “both known love” with others, but both men say that their present loves are the best. (Sheeran married Cherry Seaborn in 2019, John has been with his husband, David Furnish, since 2005.) Both men sing of drinking wine, and Ed Sheeran carries around a glass of wine in the video (while dancing and dressed in a Santa suit).
Each year, many musical artists try to come out with new songs for Christmas that, they hope, will be timeless classics. Some new songs flop, while others soar to the top of the charts. This new “Merry Christmas” single by Ed Sheeran and Elton John is one that’s at the top of the charts, but that doesn’t mean it’s a family classic.
