Album Review

When last we heard from synth-popsters Cobra Starship back in 2009, the band (with an assist from  Gossip Girls Leighton Meester) was happily embracing naughtiness on ” Good Girls Go Bad.” The lyrics of this latest hit don’t go quite so far. But the song’s video enthusiastically picks up the slack.

Brandishing an undulating, hypnotic dance beat that would be right at home on a Pitbull or Black Eyed Peas song, “You Make Me Feel …” paints a pretty simple picture: Boy likes girl, girl likes boy, it’s time for some romance. “Girl, I’ve been all over the world/Looking for you,” frontman Gabe Saporta croons. “[You’re] what I been dreaming of.” The girl in question, voiced by guest vocalist Sabi, responds eagerly … and a just bit suggestively: “I’m the baddest baby in the atmosphere/Tell me what you want so we can just do what you like.”

Apart from this flirtation-filled dance-floor courtship, though, the song mostly just hangs out in la-la land. Literally. The oft-repeated chorus drones, “You make me feel that/La la la la la/You make me feel so/La la la la la.” Ad infinitum.

As for the aforementioned video, well, it’s filled with drinking and dancing revelers who are tagged with descriptive adjectives—words like kinky, munchy and thirsty. Saporta and Sabi both get labeled incomplete.

Rapid-fire photos show folks flipping the bird, a man grabbing a woman’s breast, and two women kissing. An always-smiling woman keeps dragging people into the bathroom for undisclosed shenanigans.

All of that to say, the video doesn’t make me feel nearly as good as the song alone might have.
