If you go back eight years to the summer of 2011, you’ll hear Canadian singer Carly Rae Jepsen’s smash hit single “Call Me Maybe” blasting through every functional speaker in the known universe. In fact, it’s still on the radio, as are a few other tunes from Jepsen’s three studio albums.
Now, 33-year-old Carly Rae is back at it again, working on a fourth album and releasing her latest single, “Now That I Found You.” It’s a pop-filled, sugar-coated dance tune that’s all about an invigorating love too perfect to keep secret.
Carly is all about this new romance of hers, as she and a new beau share intimate moments and conversations (“Waking up next to you every morning/How did we get this far?/ … And in the nighttime, you tell me your whole life”) without the crippling fear of rejection (“You and me get too real, but all I feel is alright”).
Even though Carly wants to protect her heart where love once felt impossible (“My heart’s a secret”), she now feels completely open (“I don’t wanna hide my love/I don’t wanna waste it”) as she asks her partner to “keep” her heart while she gives their relationship all she’s got.
It is, we hear, a relationship that makes her “come alive” like no another.
If you just listen to this tune, you’d probably think Jepsen is swooning over her latest human crush. But in the video, the dream of finding “the one” is represented by … a cat.
The video opens with Jepsen in a dark alley. She’s about to step into her fancy car when a fat, orange tabby (taking shelter in a dilapidated, cardboard box) catches first her ear, then her eye.
And then, BOOM! It’s “love” at first sight.
Jepsen and kitty share the same bed, the same kitchen table and the same bathroom (we see Jepsen’s silhouette through the shower curtain). And Carly Rae even goes so far as to smoke hookah tinged with catnip.
Carly Rae also prances around her suddenly cat-themed house in some revealing outfits. We see her in a semi-translucent robe of sorts, as well as wearing cat-print underwear, cat-print sweaters and kitty themed leotards in a video that blurs the lines between being silly and slightly sensual.
Carly Rae Jepsen’s biggest hits have definitely been on the lighter, more playful side. And that’s true again here, both musically and in the video—albeit with a few lines and images that give this bouncy, light-hearted romance a mildly suggestive vibe without ever getting too explicit.
