Album Review

If you know anything about the Christian rap scene, then you probably know about 32-year-old hip-hop artist Andy Mineo.

A New York native, Mineo has been making music since he was a kid. His first mixtape came out in 2009. Since then, he’s released multiple mixed tapes and albums, often with collaborations from other well-known Christian artists, such as Lecrae.

Mineo’s latest single, “Always in a Rush” finds him teaming up with rapper and producer Mez. It focuses on how Andy feels like he’s always on the move, how he’s trying to balance what he wants to accomplish with what matters most.

Always on the Run

Mineo struggles to balance relaxing and rest with all the things that he knows need done (“I feel guilty every time I watch TV/I feel like I ought to be working/I feel like there’s things I still want to be/And it isn’t gonna happen if I’m just relaxing”).

He recognizes that sometimes we need help to keep moving forward (“I might need to see doctors when I’m not seeing progress, my mind gets stuck”). But he seems to wonder if the things he struggles with also connect to the music he creates (“I wonder if I could break ground without no breakdown”).

Mineo voices other concerns as well about his fans’ loyalty (“I wonder how long my fan base will stay down”), his health (“Worries this clock gon’ stop, that this heart won’t tick”) and the unknown future (“Missing what I got for things I still ain’t get”).

Despite those concerns, Mineo acknowledges that having your priorities in line is crucial, as is spending time with those you love (“I’m always in a rush trying to get home”). And he hopes that, for all of these things and more, “time is on my side.”
