Album Review

Twenty-nine-year-old Thomas Rhett has become a modern country sensation in recent years. In 2017, he released his popular third album, Life Changes. This year, he was named Male Artist of the Year at the prestigious Academy of Country Music Awards—a testament to how he’s been redefining what “country” means.

And it looks like he’s just getting started.

Last month, Rhett released “Look What God Gave Her,” the first track on his upcoming fourth studio album, Center Point Road. It’s a sweet, catchy, country-pop hit that focuses on the love of his life: his wife.

The Love Story …

Rhett’s never been shy about saying just how much he adores his wife, Lauren Akins. And he’s sweetly singing her praises again here.

The song lists a number of things Rhett loves about her. He sings about how humble Lauren is, even after she unexpectedly became a popular social media influencer on Instagram (“Don’t even want the attention/But yeah, that’s all that she’s getting/I know she’s got haters/But it ain’t her fault, nah”). He loves how winsome she is (“Her song is on and she’s spinning around, yeah”), and how he just can’t seem to get enough (“She got me drunk like Corona/Heart racing like it’s Daytona/Ooh, I’m in heaven, I swear, right now”).

He melts over how she’s “got that look in her eyes” that “can hypnotize.” And how “when she walked in here this evening, I thought, yeah/That girl one in seven billion/Got everyone in here feeling/Like there’s a fire in this building, so hot.”

But Rhett’s not done yet, as he sings about the way his wife’s love prompts him to think about the God who made her: “Every kiss, I could die/It’s like the heavens opened wide/Man, I swear I’ve seen the light.” And then the song’s title line: “Look what God gave her/How perfect he made her.”

… Everyone Wants

If you’ve ever seen a video with Rhett and wife, Lauren Akins, you’ve probably been drawn to the evident affection they share. Married when they were both 22, Rhett and his wife embody a real, down-to-earth mutal admiration that seems to fade in many couples. But not with these two, or their adorable girls: Willa Grace and Ada James.

In a YouTube interview with Access, Rhett said of his wife’s support, “We’re just partners in this crazy world together.” And that’s exactly what shines through in the song’s video, too.

It opens with Rhett sitting in an empty white room, jamming on his guitar. Colors and shapes begin to take form and change as shots of Lauren and Rhett flirting come into focus. Later, we see their two daughters twirling delightedly about, while subsequent scenes focus on various women who are making an impact in their community.

Rhett said of that aspect of the video that he wanted to “include other inspirational women who are doing some amazing things.” Like “the founder of Love One and her family, the women of Thistle Farms and an incredible artist who also did our art for the single cover to come be featured.”

All in all, it’s a sweet video that illustrates exactly what Rhett suggests. There are no issues with it, a rare thing indeed in the music video world. And while Thomas Rhett compares being in love to being drunk, that’s really the only issue worth noting in the kind of song that many a girl wishes her man would write about her.
