Movie Review

Queen Amber is heading into the busiest season of her life. She thought that investigating the royal family of Aldovia years before had been a busy time. And she was certain that nothing could match the chaos of becoming queen of Aldovia.

But nothing screams “unpredictable madness” like having a baby.

With only a few weeks before the baby’s arrival, King Richard and Queen Amber have a lot to do. They’ll need to set up a nursery, have a baby shower, prepare mentally for their lives to change. And, most importantly, they must host King Tai and Queen Ming of Penglia for the signing of the sacred peace treaty between Penglia and Aldovia.

An ancient tradition passed down for hundreds of years, the signing of the treaty is a momentous event. And legend has it that if the treaty isn’t signed at midnight on Christmas Eve, the royal firstborn baby will be cursed.

But it’s only a legend. Until, of course, the treaty goes missing and Richard and Amber are forced to put their parental duties on hold to recover the treaty and save the life of their unborn baby.

Positive Elements

Queen Amber and King Richard prepare for the birth of their first child by talking about the responsibility of parenting and by spending time together dreaming of their expanding family. King Richard takes good care of Queen Amber, making sure she gets lots of rest before their newborn arrives.

Queen Helena (King Richard’s mother) and Queen Ming assure Amber that she will be a wonderful mother. Royal family members and friends throw Amber an elaborate, impromptu baby shower. Family and friends dote on the baby.

The two royal families discuss their kingdom-wide initiatives, such as helping mothers, improving education and investing in healthcare for their citizens. Amber seeks to bring Aldovia “into the 21st century” by signing a legendary treaty—one that’s previously only been signed by kings—and she encourages Queen Ming to sign the document as well.

Queen Ming and King Tai offer to stay at the palace to help Amber prepare for the arrival of her baby.

Spiritual Elements

Emily learns of an old legend that suggests a royal firstborn baby can be cursed by a sorceress if a vital treaty isn’t signed at exactly the right moment. Emily’s mother, along with others, assures her that the tale isn’t true; she also says sorcery was “discredited a long time ago.” Still, Emily is later scared to enter the royal dungeon after a guard tells her he heard “tortured moaning” from a ghost.

Queen Helena assures Amber that although her mother has passed, her “spirit” lives on in Amber and will live on in her future child. Queen Amber and King Richard practice “guided imagery meditation” to prepare for the birth of their firstborn. Amber asks about “hypnobirthing,” a relaxation technique that incorporates self-hypnosis throughout labor.

Family and friends gather to sing the Christmas carol “Hark! The Herald Angels Sing.”

Sexual Content

Queen Amber’s friend, Melissa, gets jealous when another woman flirts with her boyfriend, Simon. Melissa admits that she feels inseucre in part because her previous boyfriends have all cheated on her. Simon proposes to Melissa.

Amber wears a dress that shows a little cleavage. King Tai jokes that King Richard used to be a “playboy prince.” Couples kiss, flirt, cuddle and hold hands. It’s clear that two male designers are gay.

Violent Content

Members of the royal family discuss a historical war. A doctor accidentally crashes her car into a snow mound.

Crude or Profane Language

We hear the phrases “oh my gosh” and “oh my goodness” a few times each.

Drug and Alcohol Content

Men and women alike consume wine and champagne at royal gatherings. Amber reads about a former prince being poisoned. Amber is offered pain medication for labor pain but refuses to take anything.

Other Negative Elements

Simon, Lynn and a few others are falsely accused of stealing from the kingdom. A trusted employee pilfers from the royal family. Emily makes a few sarcastic comments directed toward Simon.

Conclusion

A Christmas Prince: The Royal Baby is the third movie in Netflix’ Christmas trilogy featuring iZombie’s Rose McIver. A predictable, Hallmark-inspired flick, this movie is as clean as its predecessors, with few content concerns worth noting.

The inclusion of two gay characters was hinted at in the previous flick and continues here. And we also hear superstitious spiritual legends featuring a ghost, a curse and a sorceress.

But mild nods to magical fairy tales of old don’t derail The Royal Baby. Once again, the heart of Netflix’s latest Christmas Prince film centers on the importance of family, the need for equality and the value of human life.
