You know, I’m not sure whether those dwarves really need to risk life-and-limb tromping to Lonely Mountain to reclaim their family fortune. Looks like they’re making plenty at the movies.
The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey pillaged an estimated $84.8 million at the box office—a record for a December opening—and burgled another $138.2 million overseas. That kind of cash is bound to make a certain dragon jealous, methinks.
The Hobbit made nearly 12 times the money of the weekend’s second-place finisher, Rise of the Guardians. DreamWorks’ animated holiday lark earned another $7.4 million, edging out Steven Spielberg’s historical drama Lincoln (which finished third with $7.2 million).
As he seems to have done all autumn, the venerable American president tussled with the venerable British spy James Bond in the box office derby. This time, Lincoln wound up the apparent victor, beating Skyfall’s $7 million take by $200,000. But both movies have done quite well for themselves. Lincoln has made $107.9 million in its six-week run, making it the most lucrative Oscar-bait movie out there. And Skyfall—well, it’s merely the most successful James Bond movie ever (not factoring in inflation, of course). It’s made $272.4 million so far, and it’s not done yet.
Rounding out the Top Five—as it has for the last four weeks—is Ang Lee’s Life of Pi. The tiger-(mostly)-out-of-water fable earned $5.4 million, bringing its total tally to $69.6 mil. That’s grrrrrreeeaat!
Final figures update: 1. The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey $84.6 million; 2. Rise of the Guardians, $7.1 million; 3. Lincoln, $7 million; 4. Skyfall, $6.6 million; 5. Life of Pi, $5.4 million.
