In the great big world of the city, there are so many things to see. But we don’t always take the time to really see them. There are kids, pigeons, cars and dogs. And so much more.

A young boy or girl finishes the school day and steps out to see mom standing there, ready for a nice walk home.
After my school day is done
I see Pepper
Next to Peanut
Next to Mama
And as they walk home, they suddenly recognize all the wonderful things around them.
Next to me I see a Tree
Next to a Bright Red Car
Next to Pigeons
And there are even cool things to see overhead.
Mama says, Look Up!
And I see a Puffy Cloud
Next to an Airplane
The walk down familiar city streets takes on a new shine even though the things and people may be very much the same.
I see Locked Bikes
Next to my Neighbors
Next to my Stoop
We’re home
And home offers the warmth of family, food, fun and bedtime.
And cozy in my bed
I feel Soft
Next to Soft
Next to Soft
Shhhh
Night-night

The book gives kids the soothing sense of a safe world that’s ordinary and normal. But at the same time, it’s a place filled with interesting and colorful things if we take the time to see them.
Neighbors smile and wave.
Mom walks the dog and stays close for protection. Dad cooks a tasty meal they share together. They read a story book together. It’s a happy, safe home.

Have you ever taken the time to really see the things around you? Or do you tend to miss them because they seem very familiar? What are your favorite things in the neighborhood around you? Where are your favorite places? Who are your favorite people?
If any of those favorites changed, how do you think it would make you feel? Why do you think that’s true?
Have you ever thought about the fact that no matter what changes happen in your life, God is always exactly the same? Take a look at Hebrews 13:8. What do you think that means?
This simple and sweet picture book is designed to get very young kids thinking about the world around them: the things they see and how they all fit together.
The book also asks young readers (or young listeners) to think about their place within a family and a community.

Book reviews cover the content, themes and worldviews of fiction books, not necessarily their literary merit, and equip parents to decide whether a book is appropriate for their children. The inclusion of a book’s review does not constitute an endorsement by Focus on the Family.
