The Plugged In Show, Episode 205: The Worldview Hurricane. Plus, ‘Loki’

LISTEN TO THE PLUGGED IN SHOW, EPISODE 205

Remember when entertainment was clean? Remember when it was innocent and wholesome? Remember when we could just watch a movie and not have to deal with so many problems on our screens?

Yeah, about that.

Sure, in some ways, our entertainment culture is getting more problematic. But in other ways, it’s getting less so. Want proof? Just flip on the original Dumbo from 1941 and ponder its arguably racist crows, its young, drunk pachyderms, its scary hallucinations and the heartbreaking separation of a child (albeit an elephant child) from its mother. And it was rated G.

Adam Holz, host for this episode of The Plugged In Show, describes this phenomenon as a worldview hurricane—where each age emphasizes and de-emphasizes its own sets of moral issues. Back in 1941, you’d never see too much skin on screen, and sex was only hinted at. But smoking? Drinking? No problem. And as the Plugged In staff has gone back and reviewed older movies from the 1980s and ‘90s, we’ve found that some of the films we might’ve loved as a kid have big issues we should consider before showing them to our own kids.

And while we’re talking about the sensitivities and oddities of different eras, why not talk about Disney+’s Loki, which takes time twists to a whole different level? Yep, Loki is arguably the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s most thoughtful and most convoluted show, and we try to unravel it a bit here.

Speaking of time, we appreciate you spending a little of yours with us. And if you don’t mind, why not share a few more minutes with us and share your thoughts? What beloved classics of yesteryear have turned out not to be so “beloved” when you watched them a few years (or decades) later? Are you watching Loki? What do you think about it?
